Several months ago I posted some information about the 1952 shoeshine competition in Wilson.  The competition was photographed for Life Magazine by  Life and Ebony photographer, John G. Zimmerman, but unfortunately Life never published the article.  But now thanks to the efforts of John’s daughter, Linda Zimmerman, the photos have resurfaced and were featured on WUNC and UNC TV along with interviews with participants in the competition and their family.  Also I am proud to say that I say that I provided some of the research for the piece by locating Wilson Times articles on the competition and tracking down participants (although  I could not find  the Ernest Sherrod that is mentioned in the TV clip).

Generously, Linda Zimmerman is donating  the library a set of prints of the  competition  from the John G. Zimmerman Archive.  These photos are an invaluable addition to our collection and to the community.

Also, check out the John G. Zimmerman Archive website, there are some iconic, era defining photographs from a true master photographer.

  1. Follow-up: Shared this on my Facebook page last night, and the crowd went wild! 🙂 Several people recognized their relatives, and I found out a college buddy is related by marriage to Ernest Sherrod!
